Need for Network Security

Today's evolving threat landscape is filled with sophisticated, targeted attacks which have alarmed the IT industry. CIOs and IT managers are trying their best to protect their organization from all kinds of emerging threats.

Why businesses need network security?
The purpose of network security is essentially to prevent loss through misuse of data. Businesses today require network security even if they do not rely heavily on the Internet. Network security is becoming an integral part of all businesses as it offers multiple layers of security. Examples include firewalls, anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, intrusion prevention systems and virtual private networks that allow users to securely access the network from a remote location. Organizations need to secure their network from threats like breaches of confidentiality, data destruction and data manipulation.

How does network security work?
Network security is accomplished through hardware and software. The software must be constantly updated and managed to protect you from emerging threats. Network security system usually consists of many components that work in tandem to protect your network. Ideally, all components work together, which minimizes maintenance and improves security.

Business benefits of network security
There are many business benefits that organization gains by adopting an efficient network security system. The organization will be protected against disruption from outside sources, and this will keep the workforce more productive. It will also allow the company to meet mandatory regulatory compliance with state and federal agencies. Most importantly, it will protect your customer’s data thereby safeguarding against legal action due to data theft. This kind of protection is priceless when considering possible damage to the company’s reputation.

Expert Tip

Make your staff aware of the important role they play in security

It is easy to assume that your staff knows the impact of security breaches. However, your staff are in the frontline of defence, and often, the weakest link to enterprise security.

Human error is the biggest cause of data security breaches. Yes, hackers can access your network remotely without setting foot in your office. However, your organization is placing itself at risk when employees treat security casually, sharing widely, emailing socially, and taking valuable information with them when they leave. A simple step like educating employees including consultants, partners, and vendors too, can ensure that human error is minimalized.

The Era of Everything-As-A-Service

The technology industry is in the early stages of a big shift – everyone is moving to the concept of Everything-As-A-Service. Over the last few years, it has become simple and capital-efficient to evolve with new technology.

The idea of technology being delivered as a service rather than on an architecture is not new. However, in the last few years, the concept has taken shape and now, it appeals to most IT managers.

There is no denying that both tech and non-tech businesses are rapidly moving away from traditional legacy systems and internal maintenance of equipment, towards the as-a-service landscape. The main benefit of this move is that an organization can focus on its core business and allign their activities with their goals.

According to a recent CIO survey conducted by IBM, a vast majority of CIOs and IT decision makers are either already using service-oriented IT frameworks for asset management and delivery, or have plans to do so in the near future. It reports that only 17 percent stated they are not interested at all in these services, and this number is very likely to decline.

As the idea of Everything as a Service evolves, our industry has an opportunity to reinvent the computing industry and create dynamic services that changees how we do business. In this era of third-party IT delivery, I wonder how many IT managers have the time to manage their own infrastructure. The tides are changing – the next-gen CIO has newer priorities.
