Dear Readers,
Greetings from Swan Solutions!
Oftentimes, we get the wonderful opportunity to be part of the most important decisions that our clients make. Increasing their IT budgets, investing in new technologies or even the tough call of changing an existing vendor - all of this have an enduring impact on their IT as well as the overall business growth.
The one thing that has always fascinated us in this journey is the evolution of open source within enterprises. A technology that started off as a low-cost alternative has now become an inevitable component for driving innovation, productivity and business transformation.
Enterprises want to avoid being the victims of vendor lock-in, which escalates cost and limits their choices.
Whether it’s the cloud, software-defined infrastructure or digitization, open source standards and technologies are at the core. Enterprises have no scepticism whatsoever, relying on open source platforms for their mission-critical workloads.
With more than 55 percent organizations leveraging it for production environments, the enterprise IT’s commitment to open source is only going to grow stronger.
Sincerely,
Signature

Why Open Source Will Thrive in India
Open source has always been a dominant player in the government sector in India. Small and mid-enterprises, educational sector and individual developers too have adopted this technology right from the beginning. There is now a concentrated effort from various stakeholders in the industry to further promote the adoption of open source in India.
The Indian government's Open Source Policy is one such initiative to fuel the democratic use of open source in the country.
The policy, announced in 2015, states that Government of India shall endeavour to adopt Open Source Software in all e-Governance systems implemented by various Government organizations, as a preferred option in comparison to Closed Source Software. Interestingly, the policy also promotes re-use of existing government applications by opening the source code, in order to reduce costs and development time and improve the overall quality and security through increased transparency and mass peer review.
Open source will be an extremely important aspect for the success of Digital India program, experts argue. The Government of India envisions that only an ‘interoperable ecosystem of data, applications and processes can make the right information available to the right user at the right time. In the near future, open source is expected to see increased adoption in transportation, smart cities and agriculture in the country.
As Indian enterprises prepare themselves for the next phase of modernization and digitization, open source will be a crucial factor in facilitating innovation, taming cost and ensuring control.

Expert Tip
Never Ignore Support and Management of OSS
The increased adoption of open source software (OSS) and technologies has always had a significant impact on innovation, agility and cost savings of an organization. Studies indicate that a typical enterprise and application stack is made up of over 50 percent open source technologies. However, it’s important that organizations pay equal attention to the management and support of these technologies. A lack of understanding toward the usage and management of open technologies can lead to critical vulnerabilities that can impact the enterprise modeling, risk profile and DevOps productivity of the organization. Establish an efficient and up-to-date process for choosing, managing and remediating open source technologies.
